A Bout of Deep Depression vs A Slump

[원문]:Jung's Fordham lectures, in which he openly broke with Freud, finally took place in 1912. That same year, the Times published both its admiring full-page story on Jung and Moses Allen Starr's allegations about Freud's "peculiar" life in Vienna. But it was too late. Jung's star never rose anywhere near as high as Freud's. His rupture with Freud precipitated in him a bout of deep depression, marked by several psychotic or quasi-psychotic episodes. [타임스지]:1)역자는 the Times를 “타임스지”라고 옮기고 있으나 오역입니다. 어째서 오역일까요? 영국에 진짜 The Times지가 있기 때문입니다. 2)여기서 the Times는 The New York Times를 미국인의 입장에서 또는 뉴욕 거주 주민으로서 줄여서 부르는 것이며 따라서 제3국인이 이 고유 명칭을 옮길 때에는 [뉴욕타임스]라고 옮겨야 합니다.


[depression vs slump]:1)역자는 원문의 “ a bout of deep depression"을 ”침체기“로 옮기고 말았으나 오역입니다. 2)침체(slump)란 예컨대 요미우리 자이언츠의 4번 타자인 이승엽선수가 2할 5분대의 저조한 성적을 내는 경우를 말합니다. 2)depression은 본격 의학 용어로서 ”우울증“을 의미합니다. 따라서, "a bout of depression"는 ”우울증 기미“라고 옮겨야 합니다.


[He would later deride Freud's ideas as "Jewish psychology."]:1)이 문장도 물론 오역입니다. 이 문장을 역자는 {{후에 융은 [유대인 심리학]에서 프로이트의 사상을 비웃었다.}}라고 옮기고 있으나 이해할 수가 없습니다. 2)“Jewish psychology"는 [유대인 심리학]이란 저술 이름이 아니라 융의 언사를 인용한 것입니다. 거듭 따옴표 (이중인용부호) (double quotation mark)는 다른 사람의 언사를 직접 인용할 때 쓰는 것입니다. 그러고 보니 역자는 구두점에 대한 지식이 부족한 것 같습니다. 원문에서 ”peculiar"를 ‘별난’이라고 옮기고 있는데요. 단순 인용 부호 (single quotation mark)는 사람의 언사 이외의 것을 인용할 때 쓰죠.

[comments]::1)I, a "self-styled" translation reviewer, (Why? There is literally none but this writer working in the capacity of that name tag.) have much to say about this kind of version. A lot of substantial problems are at issue. Some of which are technical and others are not.


2)The poor Korean readers are totally kept in the dark about the geographical identities of Fordham and the Times while reading 포드햄 and 타임스지 (which are the transliterations of Fordham and the Times.) 타임스지 (the transliteration of the Times) is of course a mistranslation because it is the shortened form of The New York Times with which the locals are familiar but to which the 3rd-country people are not accustomed and because there is the "real" Times newspaper across the Atlantic Ocean.


3)The ordinary people are not supposed to brag about their copious vocabulary of medical jargons. But an exact knowledge of some commonplace words such as depression might belong to a "general knowledge." The translator has got it wrong. Utterly wrong in that he has misconstrued the phrase {{...a bout of deep depression}}to mean to the effect that "...he had had a period of deep slump."


4)The word 'slump' mainly means "a time of slow (economic) activity." The word 'depression' does not have something to do with the effectiveness of one's job activity. It is a state in which one suffers a prolonged feeling of sorrow, which is a mental illness, of course.


5)The translator turns out to be very short on such trivial syntactic skills as punctuation marks. He has mistaken the phrase "Jewish psychology" to mean in effect the title of another book of Jung's. His ludicrous version: "Jung had derided Freud's ideas in his Jewish psychology." The correct version should have been:"Jung had derided Freud's ideas from time to time, saying, 'It's nothing but Jewish psychology.'"
