Dominant Elites=>Colonial Populations

[the media]:1)역자가 왜 the media를 “방송매체”라고 옮기고 있는지 정말 알 수가 없군요. 미디어는 “the mass media"를 지칭하고 미디어의 역사를 보더라도 신문=>라디오=>텔레비전=>인터넷 등으로 발전된 것을 감안한다면 방송만을 지칭한다고 할 수는 없죠. 2)따라서 이 부분의 번역은 차라리 ”미디어“라고 옮기면 될 것입니다.

[comments]::1)What makes the category of the media? The history of its development tells us all about that. The media, that is, the mass media in the age of the mass culture, have a long history of newspapers behind them. Radios and televisions have come after them. I can't understand that the translator has mistaken the word of the media to mean only "the broadcasting media."


2)The translator has also got it wrong. Utterly wrong in that he has misconstrued the phrase {{dominant elites}} to mean in effect "power elites." The original writer didn't say that "dominant elites" in Sentence Two of the paragraph referred to "ruling elites of imperial states." But I think the implication indicates that.


3)Why? Although the phrase of {{dominant elites}} is synonymous with the phrase of ruling elites (power elites) or something, the meaning of {{dominant elites}}should be determined in the context of the relationship with the phrase {{colonial populations.}} Dominant elites rule colonial populations. Therefore, the subject of the above sentence means "the ruling class of the imperial states."


4)The one who has "manipulated", or distorted facts turns out to be the translator himself. The aftermath is great which the translator has made by not defining the meaning of "colonial populations" thoroughly. After all, he has ended up putting the entire sentence two into the Korean version to the effect that "the ruling class sometimes makes every effort to maintain the passivity of the general public."


5)To maintain the passivity of the general public? It's not just impossible for the democratically elected ruling elites of independent sovereign states but harmful for them to make their people politically passive. Rather, "the public servants" of the democratic governments do their utmost to let their people enthusiastically participate in various kinds of political activities, which do both the ruling elites and the governed good.
