[good]:1)왜 대한민국의 영어학습자 심지어 번역자들은 이 단어만 들어가면 그저 ‘착한’ ‘선량한’ (acting in a righteous way; virtuous)의 의미로 파악할까요? 정말 답답합니다. 2)영여사전을 한번 찾아보기나 하세요. 이 의미의 정의는 저 아래 7.8번을 차지하고 있고요 그 상위로는 ‘훌륭한’ ‘능력있는’ ‘우수한 품질의’ 뜻을 가지고 있어요.


[능력을 나타내는 good]:1)형용사 good는 능력을 나타내는 (잘 한다) 의미로 가장 많이 쓰여요. 2)예:He is a good swimmer=>He swims well.
He is a good speaker=>He speaks well.
He is a good player=>He plays well.
He is a good cook=>He cooks well.


[a good student]:1)He is a good student=>He studies well. 그는 공부 잘하는 학생이다, 라는 의미이지 결코 “그는 선량한 학생이다” (He is a good-natured student)라는 의미가 아니에요.


[civics]:1)역자는 {{all good civics students}}를 {{선량한 시민으로서 보통 학생들은}}운운하고 있는데요. 어처구니가 없어요. (ludicrous). 전혀 말도 안 되는 억지라고요. 2)우선 이 부분의 바른 번역을 보인다면 “학교 다닐 때 (주로 중.고등학교에서 사회 공부를 잘 한 학생들이라면”의 의미로 옮겨야 해요. 우리나라로 치면 [사회탐구]라는 과목 있잖아요. 그게 바로 미국의 경우 civics에요. 그 학과를 통해서 학생들은 미국의 정부조직, 정부가 하는 일, 국민의 권리와 의무 따위를 배우죠. 아주 오랜 지난날에는 우리나라에서는 공민이라는 과목으로 불렸고 최근에는 중학교에서는 사회, 고등학교에서는 사회탐구 그 과목이 바로 civics인 것입니다.

[all good civics students]:1)역자는 “선량한 시민으로서 보통 학생들”이라고 옮기고 있으나 이미 언급한 바와 같이 어불성설입니다. 2)good는 “선량한” 것과는 관련이 없는 “능력의 형용사” (an adjective indicating capability)일 뿐입니다. 3)civics는 “시민” (citizens, civilians)과는 관련이 없는 학교에서 공부하는 학과의 이름입니다. (사회. 공민) 3)이 부분의 바른 번역은 “사회 과목을 잘 하는 모든 학생들”의 뜻을 가집니다.

2)When you mention somebody around you saying, "she is a good girl," it means that the young female person you have just mentioned is the one of desirable personality. It means that she is nice to you. It also means that she is kind to people she happens to encounter.


3)But when you refer to somebody, saying "He is a good baseball player," it doesn't mean that the person mentioned is a good-natured baseball player. In other words, the adjective 'good' in this case has nothing to do with his personality or character. Rather, it has something to do with his capability.


4)Let me show you examples how the word good is used to express someone is able to do something well.
He is a good swimmer.=>He swims well.
He is a good speake.r=>He speaks well.
He is a good student.=>He studies well.
He is a good eater.=>He eats well.
He is a good cook.=>He cooks well.


5)The translator has got it wrong. Utterly wrong in that he has misconstrued the expression {{As all good civics students know, the Fourth Amendment continues:}} to mean to the effect "As all good-natured civilian and ordinary students know,..." The civics is not civilian citizens but the subject which middle and high school students must study to know how their government functions and what the people are supposed to do for their country.


6)The phrase {{all good civics students}} naturally means all the middle- and high school students of the United States who have taken the subject of civics and gotten good marks during their school years. So, even the high school students who took the subject might not be able to know about the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution if they were dozing off during the lesson.


7)The statement {{As all good civics students know}} also implies that all the citizens of the United States might not understand their Constitution. Why? That's because the United States does regretfully hold high rates of illiteracy.
