A Welfare Mother vs A Pensioner's Life

[to stump the state]:1)역자는 이 부분을 “아칸소 주 전역을 돌아다니다”라고 옮기고 있는데 오역입니다. “돌아다니다”라는 동사의 의미를 생각해 보세요. 2) to stump the state란 정치인이 선거 관할 구역을 연설을 하면서 돌아다니는, 즉 “유세하는” 것을 의미하는 것입니다.

[연금 생활에서 벗어나게 된 어머니]:1)정말이지 어이없는 창작입니다. 이 지구상의 누구라도 그가 어떤 지위의 사람일지라도 늙어 은퇴하면 연금생활을 하게 마련인데, 그리고 그 생활은 혜택받은 생활인데 (연금 혜택을 받지 못하는 수많은 동포 또는 인류를 생각해 보세요) 왜 “연금 생활에서 벗어납”니까? 2) “연금생활자”는 영어로는 "a pensioner's life"라고 합니다.

[comments]::1)Bad habits die hard. The ill-formed habits, personal or social, do the individuals themselves or the society they belong to no good. It's time you the Korean translators did them in and buried them.


2)"The law and order" is the motto of every sane society. The individual citizens are also supposed to be oriented toward the same destination, which should be a guidepost to lead every route in the process. To translators, I mean the law and order by syntactic and semantic rule and order.


3)Some Korean translators, most of the English language "leaders" engaged in every level of the teaching profession included, do have no concept of order at all. They do have no idea at all that just like the season of spring comes after winter and just like people are born, raised, grown up, married, get old and get sick and die, the English prose is composed by and in the law of order.


4)The translator has got it wrong. Utterly wrong in that he has misconstrued the phrase {{a welfare mother who had enrolled in our work program and finished high school, started college, and gotten a job}}to mean to the effect that "...she enrolled in our program, finished high school, started college and eventually was able to get rid of pensioner's life."


5)A pensioner's life is not one to be looked down on or to be discarded. It is rather the one dreamed of by any human being after he or she has been retired. It is the best perquisite of one's life, an inevitable destination which can be enjoyed by the people who has prepared himself or herself for it.


6)The interpretational error is caused by the clinical bad habit of Korean learners of English, who have been practiced to the retroactive modification, just like the salmon come against the current, rather than descriptive interpretation in the orderly fashion. In plain English, the woman had been a welfare recipient in the beginning, but as time passed and when she entered college and got a job, she was not a welfare recipient any more.
